Mixtec culture

Welcome to the Mixtec Culture website. We hope these pages will show you more about the history, arts, literature and music of the region. The Mixtec is found in the mountains of Puebla, Oaxaca and Guerrero states and its territories range from deep forest, humid coastlands to lush valleys. Since the first settlers arrived over 2500 years ago it has developed a strong regional identity with its dances and artwork famous throughout the country and its language one of the two most popular indigenous tongues. Its pre Hispanic history has drawn international researchers to visit the cave paintings and ruins in its sacred sites whilst scrolls telling the stories of some of its most powerful leaders lie in the world's greatest museums including the British Museum and the National Library in Vienna. Lately musicians such as internationally famous Lila Downs and the late Alvaro Carrillo together with a host of artists have continued the regions rich creative tradition.
